Selective PNG metadata cleaning

Supported text, eXIf, and descriptive metadata chunks are removed. Image data and recognized rendering-critical chunks are preserved; APNG and unsupported structures are refused.

How PNG metadata cleaning works

The PNG standard (ISO/IEC 15948) stores image data and ancillary metadata in typed chunks. This cleaner validates recognized chunk boundaries and CRC-32 values, removes supported metadata chunks, and copies the image data without recompression.

Chunk typeActionContents and privacy impact
eXIfRemovedMay contain GPS location, camera make and model, and creation dates.
tEXt / zTXt / iTXtRemovedText may include software details, prompts, or author names.
tIME / hIST / bKGDRemovedDescriptive chunks are removed; bKGD may affect background rendering in some viewers.
IHDR / PLTE / tRNS / IDAT / IENDPreservedImage data and required structural chunks are copied and checked.
iCCP / sRGB / gAMA / cHRM / sBIT / pHYsRetainedColor, rendering, and resolution information is retained.
acTL / fcTL / fdATCleaning refusedAPNG animation is detected but is not supported for cleaning.

Format limitations and APNG notice

Cleaning is refused for APNG files, unsupported ancillary chunks, unknown critical chunks, or malformed structures. Recognized image data is copied without recompression; successful output checks are limited to the listed PNG structure and preservation invariants.
