JPEG Metadata Removed & Verified
EXIF, XMP, IPTC, and comment markers were removed. The ICC profile and required orientation data are retained as needed.
How JPEG Metadata Cleaning Works
JPEG files store image data and metadata in separate application markers (APP0 through APP15) before the Start of Scan (SOS) marker. Unlike tools that recompress image pixels, this cleaner rewrites metadata markers while preserving the compressed scan data byte-for-byte.
Removed and Retained JPEG Structures
| Structure | Action | Technical details |
|---|---|---|
| EXIF (APP1) | Removed | May contain camera identifiers, GPS coordinates, timestamps, and settings. A minimal orientation tag is retained only when needed. |
| XMP & Extended XMP | Removed | XML metadata packets that can contain editing history and face tags. |
| IPTC / Photoshop (APP13) | Removed | May contain editorial records, contact details, captions, and copyright information. |
| COM (Comments) | Removed | Removes free-text comments embedded by software or scanners. |
| ICC Profile (APP2) | Preserved | Retained to maintain color rendering across displays and browsers. |
| JFIF Header (APP0) | Rebuilt | Rebuilt without embedded thumbnails while retaining the required image header. |
| Scan Data (SOS to EOI) | Preserved 1:1 | Copied byte-for-byte; the compressed image data is not decoded or transcoded. |
Format Limitations and Fail-Closed Policy
Cleaning is refused when a JPEG contains unknown application markers with undefined visual effects, multi-picture (MPF) data, unclassified bytes after the EOI marker, or conflicting orientation tags. This fail-closed behavior avoids changing image data when safe handling cannot be confirmed.
